Boilers are used to produce steam. The generation part of a steam system uses a boiler to add energy to a feedwater supply to generate steam. The energy is released from the combustion of fossil fuels or from process waste heat. Steam boilers are manufactured in a variety of configurations, but all consist of a chamber in which water is heated to the boiling point under pressure by the combustion of fuel. Steam is delivered to heat exchangers or air handler coils where the heat flows to the material being heated. The term is generally used to describe Boilers in which steam is generated by firing coal, oil or gas in a furnace whose envelope consists of water-cooled tubes. Combustion products may be ducted over the tube banks providing superheat, reheat, economizing and combustion air-heating duties.
Boiler, also called Steam Generator, apparatus designed to convert a liquid to vapour. In a conventional steam power plant, a boiler consists of a furnace in which fuel is burned, surfaces to transmit heat from the combustion products to the water, and a space where steam can form and collect.
